Length: 470-610mm

Voice: Loud raucous quack-single or repeated slowly or rapidly according to circumstance.

Food: Eats plant material, yabbies, shrimps and aquatic insects.

Where Found: See map. Inland and estuarine waters. Will use any wetlands- even puddles.

Habits: Randomly nomadic, following floods and leaving drought affected areas. Visit rice paddies in huge numbers.

Nesting: Nests are cups or scrapes in the ground, in grass, reeds or tree holes. 8-10 eggs well covered with down.
