Gallus domesticus

Description

Chickens are domestic birds that cannot fly. There are more than 150 different breeds of chicken and they vary in many different colours, patterns and sizes.

Distribution

Originated in India and south-east Asia but now found almost everywhere in the world.

Lifespan

Between 5 - 7 years.

Size

Between 2 - 3kgs and stand around 60cm tall.

Diet

Feeds on small seeds, herbs and leaves, grubs and insects.

Habitat

Farm settings and open canopies.

Breeding

The female will incubate the eggs for 21 days. The hen will usually stay on the nest for a few days after the first egg hatches.
