Status: Range reduced since European settlement, mainly due to clearing of forests

Where Found: See map. In remaining eucalypt forest in eastern Australia.

Habitat: Wet and dry eucalypt forests.

Food: Eats almost solely Eucalypt leaves.

Breeding: Both sexes mature at 2 years but males may not mate till 3or 4 years old. Mating from Oct.-Feb. Females has two teats but usually rear a single young.

Notes: Low energy content of diet means Koalas need to sleep for 20hrs each day Female carries one young in rear-opening pouch for six months, then on her back for a further six months.
